On October 17th and 18th, 2024, Kabarak University TVET Institute hosted an engaging and successful workshop on "Igniting the Innovative Mind." The event, organized in partnership with Viktoria Ventures, provided staff and students from the TVET and City Campus with practical training on innovation and commercialization. This dynamic event underscored Kabarak University’s commitment to nurturing creativity and problem-solving in real-world contexts.
The first day of the workshop kicked off with an opening session led by M. Faith Dentewo, the TVET innovation champion, who took participants through a deep dive into the world of innovation. Her session covered essential aspects such as understanding innovation, the innovation process, and different types of innovations. Faith emphasized workplace innovations, including systems, operations, teaching methods, and marketing strategies, encouraging participants to use the practical skills acquired in class to develop solutions to societal challenges.
“It's not just about innovating,” Faith said, “but also about commercializing it—taking the innovation to the next level with an entrepreneurial mindset.” This resonated with both students and staff as they reflected on how their innovative ideas could solve problems, generate income, and enhance their professional journeys.
The afternoon session featured a compelling talk by Dr. Mutai, the Executive Director, who expanded on the importance of building a robust innovation ecosystem at Kabarak University. He encouraged participants to make full use of the available resources to innovate and advance their ideas, using inspiring examples of those who have succeeded in the past.
The excitement continued on the second day, where the focus shifted to developing design thinking and critical thinking skills. Led by Phyllis Mbiyu and Yvonne Njeri from Viktoria Ventures, the participants were immersed in group brainstorming activities, exploring innovative ideas and solutions. These activities were designed to foster collaboration, creativity, and critical problem-solving—core elements that can help translate ideas into impactful innovations.
One of the highlights of the day was a pitching session where staff and students presented their ideas to a panel. This provided invaluable experience in articulating and defending innovation concepts, as well as preparing them for the real world of business and entrepreneurship.
The successful completion of this workshop marks the beginning of a series of exciting programs aimed at equipping Kabarak University students with the tools to innovate and commercialize their ideas. The partnership with Viktoria Ventures, supported by organizations such as KENIA, RISA, and FKE, continues to provide the necessary support to transform these ideas into marketable solutions.
The enthusiasm from participants was evident as they embraced the challenge to push their innovations to the next level, not just for personal growth but for societal benefit.
